WOT - Web Of Trust - a good tool, but you need to use your own brain

by Rudolf Faix 26. July 2015 07:41

WOT - Web Of TrustWOT - Web Of Trust is nothing else than a free browser add-on which combines different warning sources like Malwarebytes, PhishTank, etc. with a community of users which are sharing their experience with websites, online stores, scams, untrustworthy links, etc. With other words it is rating system for websites which cannot get easily influenced or cheated.

Everybody, which likes to find some good sites for business - especially in the MLM and affiliate marketing sector, should use this browser add-on in combination with the other tools I described already at "Tools helping in evaluating the promotion and reality of affiliate networks".

WOT shows a colored traffic light next to website links to tell you which sites people trust for safe searching, surfing and shopping online: green for good, red for bad, and yellow as a warning to be cautious. The icons are shown in popular search engine results, social media, online email, shortened URL’s, and lots of other sites.

An example is shown at the following screenshot:

Sample browsing with WOT - Web of Trust

If you are accidentally opening a site which has a bad reputation you get immediately a warning like shown at the following screenshot:

Site with a bad reputation

From the toolbar you are able to take a look at the rating of a site:

WOT - Web of Trust - Ratings with comments

Following the link "View details and comments", which opens in a new browser-tab, gives you some background information about the reason for the ranking. Not all user are commenting their voting. You should read in any case the positive and negative comments and make your own decision.

Don't forget: Such tools can only help you in making your decision - they cannot hindrance you making a wrong decision.

At least can save this tool a lot of your time, which you spend normally by watching the time-waster videos of the illiterates. You'll get more information about the system and/or offered products from the comments than from the time-waster videos.

Tools helping in evaluating the promotion and reality of affiliate networks

All the named tools and plugins are freeware tools and the provided links don't contain any affiliate code.

Qihoo 360 Total Security

360 Total SecurityTo have a good Virus scan is important for each computer or device. I’m using the free virus scan 360 Total Security from Qihoo including the browser plugins. This product even blocks suspicious websites and of course malware sites. You have in any the case to proceed to the site from which you get warned. I made a good experience with the support from Qihoo.

Adguard AdBlocker (browser plugin)

AdGuardAdguard AdBlocker effectively blocks all types of advertising on all web pages, even on Facebook, Youtube, and others! The security module blocks access to all fraudulent and malicious sites. You have even the choice to disable the ad blocking functions for a whole site.

Alexa Toolbar (browser plugin)

AlexaThe Alexa Toolbar shows you the rank in the traffic which a domain generates in the world wide web. Alexa says about it ranking mechanism:

Alexa’s traffic estimates and ranks are based on the browsing behavior of people in our global data panel which is a sample of all internet users.

Alexa’s Traffic Ranks are based on the traffic data provided by users in Alexa’s global data panel over a rolling 3 month period. Traffic Ranks are updated daily. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of Unique Visitors and Pageviews. Unique Visitors are determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single Pageview. The site with the highest combination of unique visitors and pageviews is ranked #1. Additionally, we employ data normalization to correct for biases that may occur in our data.

My own experience is that an Alexa rank of 200,000 is equal to around 300 visitors per day and a rank over 1,000,000 is already a big secret in the World Wide Web.

Resume: If 360 Total Security or the AdGuard plugin is warning you from visiting the site or the main site of the affiliate network has an Alexa ranking over 100,000 then you need not sign up for being an affiliate marketer. In this case you are only losing time and money.
